Topics to synchronize with group: 1. Clarification/consensus on what GPM really needs from LSWG -- realtime estimation of emissivity and associated uncertainty "Once GPM launches, the dual frequency radar will provide a high quality rainfall estimate. If your emissivity model can predict the surface emissivity (and presumably temperature), then we will be able to show that we create physically consistent Tb with the observations. Once that is the case, we'd be happy to create databases over those terrains that are a function of the variables that make the surface emissivity. Searching only the space with correct emissivity then reduces the inversion problem to the atmosphere alone and should be better than it is now. That said, you guys are on the hook first to show that if we know the hydrometeors in the atmosphere (read dual frequency radar retrieval from GPM), then you can confidently predict the upwelling Tb to some quantifiable uncertainty." -- C. Kummerow, 1/29/14 2. Strategy/approach for dynamic emissivity: full RTM-modeling, semi-empirical modeling, empirical regression, etc. 3. Need global-scale emissivity retrievals with associated estimates of errors for calibration/validation of models or "hacks" 4. Studies (e.g.,w/TRMM PR) to demonstrate/quantify impact/benefits of better surface emissivity 5. Efficient representation/implementation of multi-channel emissivities in GPROF, e.g., reduce lookup-table dimension
